An excellent result for patient Health and Safety within the Kingdom.

The Business

King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre.

The problem

The Hospital had been facing issues with bacteria, especially Legionella, in the potable water system for some time.

They have 2 main circuits which feed the main hospital and all outlying buildings. Each circuit had previously been treated with 0.2 -0.5 ppm Sodium Hypochlorite but issues still persisted.

The solution

Reza’s Industrial Solutions Team carried out an extensive survey of the Hospitals water storage and distribution systems and recommended a number of changes.

  • Firstly, we suggested the introduction of a CLO2IX Chlorine Dioxide Generator to treat all RO product water.
  • Secondly, we recommended they treat all site water with a minimum of 0.3 ppm ClO2. These changes will have a number of positive impacts on the hospitals potable water; .
  • It will remove the need for Sodium Hypo treatment of R.O. permeate water.
  • This will mean all of the hospitals water will be bromate and carcinogen free.
  • The Chlorine Dioxide will penetrate and remove biofilm in the water network.
  • Removal of biofilm will mean no legionella and other harmful bacteria.
  • Cleaner safer water for all hospital patients and staff.

Conclusion

Overall, with an investment in some modern water treatment chemistry and dosing equipment, KFSH will become the first hospital in the kingdom to use this technology to tackle the very serious problem of water borne infections.

Studies have shown that health care facilities who use Chlorine Dioxide hugely reduce the incidents of hospital borne infections, as well as reduce the recovery time of inpatients.
